COLLEGE STATION, TX. – The Western Michigan University women's basketball team suffered an 86-38 defeat on the road Sunday afternoon to Texas A&M. In the loss, junior Marina Asensio scored a team-high 10 points, while Evyn Carrier grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
The Brown and Gold shot off to a 5-4 lead after freshman Vinyet Morato and junior Asencio scored on back-to-back possessions. Despite the early burst out of the gate, Texas A&M outscored the Brown and Gold 17-5 over the remaining six and a half minutes of the quarter. After 10 minutes of play, WMU trailed the Aggies 21-10.
In the second quarter, Morato scored two field goals and Carrier drained a deep three-pointer to lead the women's basketball team offensively. At the half, The Brown and Gold faced a 42-17 deficit.
After the break, freshman D'Myjah Bolds scored a team-high four points in the quarter, while Asensio and Carrier combined for the remaining five points to lead the Brown and Gold. Entering the fourth quarter, the women's basketball team trailed 63-26.
In the fourth and final quarter, the Broncos scored a team-best 12 points behind field goals from Carrier, Hannah Spitzley, and Bolds.
Tip-Ins
Bolds registered her first career block, while redshirt freshman Carrier grabbed a career-high seven rebounds.
Redshirt freshman McKenna Macon made her Bronco debut and tallied an efficient two points, one steal, and one assist in four minutes of work.
Historical Notes
This afternoon Spitzley passed Gabi Saxman (2020-24) and moved up to 19th on WMU's all-time steals list. Spitzley has 129 career steals over the course of her Bronco career.
