KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan cross country team will begin postseason action on Saturday in Muncie, Ind., as Ball State hosts the MAC Championships. The women's 6K race is scheduled to begin at 11 AM.
LAST TIME OUT
WMU had a strong showing at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet, finishing 23rd as a team. Individually,
Lillian Zelasko paced the team, as she finished 36th. She has now been in the top 40 of every race she's competed in this season. That includes a pair of top-15 finishes.
Grace Aurand and
Brooke Soper were also strong at the meet, earning times of 22:19.5 and 22:32.7, respectively.
LAST YEAR'S EVENT
The Broncos have had success at the MAC Championships over the last couple of years. WMU finished seventh last season and fifth the year before. Western Michigan has seen at least two runners earn All-MAC status in each of the last two seasons, with
Danielle Rinn and
Kayla Schiera getting those honors last season.
Brooke Soper is the leading returner for the Broncos, as she finished 55th in last year's event. She has taken a big leap in her final year of eligibility, scoring for the team in every meet this season. She has not been lower than third in the team's lineup this year.
LILLY LEADS THE WAY
Lillian Zelasko has been WMU's top runner all season and that will continue into the MAC Championship meet this weekend. The Indiana native has paced the team in every meet she has competed in. She has a pair of top-15 finishes to go along with a 36th-place finish at the nationally-touted Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet.
This weekend marks Zelasko's first time competing at the MAC Championships, but WMU has seen freshmen perform well in recent years. Just last season,
CJ Nixon was able to grab 39th place at the conference meet. Zelasko has a PR 6K time of 21:07.0, which would have put her in 14th place at last year's meet.
