FIRST PERIOD
It didn't take long for the WMU offense to get going, as
Iiro Hakkarainen intercepted a York pass and pushed the puck ahead to Washe. He lit the lamp to put the Brown and Gold in front 1-0 just under seven minutes into the game.
The floodgates opened from there, with Lemyre firing a wrister by Lions goaltender Carter Serhyenko for a 2-0 lead not even nine minutes into the contest. After York killed off a pair of penalties, WMU was able to tally another goal.
This time, Michaels got the puck from
Grant Slukynsky and lit the lamp for a third WMU goal with under seven minutes to play in the period. About three minutes later, Nehring scored for the Broncos to make it 4-0 in the first frame. WMU carried that lead into the second 20 minutes of action.
SECOND PERIOD
The Broncos' offense wouldn't slow down there, as Costantini got a great crossing pass from
Brian Kramer and tipped it into the back of the net. WMU's lead grew to 5-0 with just over 10 minutes to play in the second frame.
With under four minutes to play in the second period, Western Michigan found an offensive spark, getting a Crusberg-Roseen blast to find the back of the net. That made it 6-0. Moments later, Costantini scored his second goal of the night on the power play to make it 7-0 with just over two minutes to play in the middle period.
THIRD PERIOD
York tightened up defensively in the final period, holding WMU to just one goal.
Liam Valente, Sharp and Washe all had quality chances in the opening minutes of the third frame.
Just over six minutes into the third period, Michaels fired a shot on net that hit the post and kicked to the corner. A few seconds after that,
Samuel Sjolund's shot was saved by the Lions.
Late in the game, WMU got one more chance on the power play and capitalized, as Sharp fired a shot into the back of the net for the eighth goal of the night.
