CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Western Michigan hockey team suffered is first loss of the season on Saturday night at Boston College. The Eagles downed the Broncos, 4-2.
Owen Michaels and
Robby Drazner scored the goals for WMU, while
Hampton Slukynsky made 32 saves in net.
FIRST PERIOD
After fending off a couple of BC shots in the opening minutes, WMU's offense found its groove.
Grant Slukynsky had a shot saved before Michaels fired a shot by Eagles goaltender Jacob Folwer to give the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game.
H. Slukynsky then went on to make a flurry of saves as the game moved by the midway point of the first frame. Following a media timeout, the Broncos worked the puck around the boards to the stick of Drazner. He ripped a shot from the blue line that found its way just under the bar for another goal. That put WMU in front 2-0.
A few minutes after that goal, Western Michigan earned the game's first power play.
Joona Väisänen had a pair of shots, including one that hit the post. The Eagles would go on to kill off the remaining time and returned to full strength.
BC went on the power play late in the opening period. H. Slukynsky would make one save and
Cole Crusberg-Roseen would block another shot to help the Broncos get back to full strength. WMU carried a two-goal advantage into the second period.
SECOND PERIOD
Liam Valente and
Zack Sharp had a couple of looks in the opening minutes of the second frame. Fowler was there to handle the chances. A couple minutes later,
Alex Bump ripped a shot off the post.
In the middle of the period, Bump and Valente nearly increased WMU's lead, but Fowler was again able to save the shots. In the back half of the period, BC started to get more looks. After collecting a missed shot, the Eagles got back to within one. Andre Gasseau scored with under four minutes to play in the frame.
WMU would get a prime opportunity from G. Slukynsky down the stretch, but the Broncos would take their one-goal lead into the final period of action.
THIRD PERIOD
After a big save by H. Slukynsky to start the period, BC was able to tie the game at 2-2. Following that, the Broncos got strong looks from
Iiro Hakkarainen, Drazner and Michaels. Fowler was there to make three saves.
WMU went on the power play with just over two minutes left, thanks to a tripping penalty on BC. Western Michigan didn't light the lamp, and the Eagles scored moments after getting back to full strength.
Boston College added an empty netter to close out a 4-2 victory.
