Men's Tennis Wraps Up ITA Midwest Regional Championships

EAST LANSING,  Mich. – Western Michigan senior Anton Arzhankin made it to the Round of 16 of the main singles draw to highlight the WMU men's tennis team's performance at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship at Michigan State over the weekend.
 
Arzhankin qualified for the main draw and opened the tournament's Round of 64 with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Illinois' Gabrielius Guzaukas. In the Round of 32, he dispatched Northwestern's Saiprakash Goli in two sets 6-1, 6-3. The Moscow, Russia, native then fell to Ohio State's Chris Li in straight sets 4-6, 3-6 in the Round of 16.
 
Sophomore Ashton Adesoro made it to the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket. He started off in the open singles draw and advanced to the main singles draw after a 6-2, 6-0 win over DePaul's Thomas Giles and a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over Michigan State's Mitchell Sheldon. In the main draw Round of 64, he fell to OSU's Alexander Bernard in straight sets 3-6, 2-6, to drop to the consolation bracket. In the opening round of the consolation bracket he defeated Northwestern's Carter Pate 6-4, 6-3. In the quarterfinals he was matched up against UND's Yu Zhang and fell 3-6, 4-6.
 
Sophomore Matej Kajzer was the other Bronco that earned a win in singles play. Kajzer was slotted in the open singles draw and picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Illinois-Chicago's Pedro Ramano Franca but missed out on advancing to the main draw after falling to Northwestern's Greg Casey, 2-6, 3-6.
 
Arzhankin and sophomore Drew Evans were WMU's most successful duo in the doubles draw. The pair opened with an 8-3 win over Michigan's Bjorn Swenson and Mert Oral. In the Round of 32, they defeated DePaul's Pablo Torres Almeida and Sven Moser, 8-6. In the Round of 16 they fell in a close match to UND's Sebastian Dominko and Peter Nad, 8-5.
 
Also picking up a win in doubles was Kajzer and Moriarty. They opened the Round of 64 with an 8-7 (7-1) win over Northern Illinois' Iker Dellien and James Theriault, but fell in the Round of 32 to MSU's Aristotelis Thanos and Ozan Baris, 8-1.
 
The Broncos are off next week and return to action Oct. 25-27 when they host the Mid-American Conference Qualifying Event.
