KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan women's soccer coach
Lewis Robinson tallied his 100th career win on Thursday night against Bowling Green. The Broncos defeated the Falcons, 4-0, at the WMU Soccer Complex.
In the win,
Jen Blitchok broke the program's single-season points record and tied the single-season goals record. She is up to 12 goals and 28 points on the season. Additionally,
Callie Cunningham registered her first career hat trick.
FIRST HALF
It didn't take long for the WMU offense to heat up, as the team's first shot of the game found the back of the net. Blitchok's pass squeaked through the BGSU defense and Cunningham was there to tap the ball into the back of the net. The Broncos had a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the match.
The Falcons had a great chance to tie the game, earning a penalty kick opportunity in the ninth minute. WMU goalkeeper
Lauren Boafo was able to stop the attempt and hold the 1-0 lead for the Brown and Gold. Following that chance,
Abby Baldridge and Blitchok got quality looks. However, WMU couldn't add to its lead as the game moved past the 20 minute mark.
Cunningham struck two more times in under two minutes to extend WMU's lead to 3-0. Her second goal of the game came thanks to a nice pass from
Jenna Blackburn, and her third goal of the match came from a nice cross from Blitchok.
WMU's offense wasn't done there, as the Broncos were taken down in the box. Blitchok lined up for the penalty kick and buried the chance to make the score 4-0 in the 31st minute. The Brown and Gold would carry that four-goal lead into the last 45 minutes of play.
SECOND HALF
Western Michigan didn't hold back to open the second half, getting shots from
June Mullen and Blackburn in the opening minutes of the half. After some back-and-forth action, Boafo made her second save of the game in the 64th minute to keep the Broncos in front by four.
The Brown and Gold got a pair of great chances in the 73rd minute, as
Jaden Peck and
Kindall Duke took aim on net. BGSU goalkeeper Payton O'Malley made diving saves on both shots. WMU would get two more shots the rest of the game and closed out a four-goal home win.
