TOLEDO, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's basketball team continues its conference slate against the Toledo Rockets on Wednesday, January 10, at 7:00 PM at Savage Arena.
Western Michigan enters the matchup against second-ranked Toledo on a season-high three-game losing streak with an overall record of 5-7 and a MAC (Mid-American Conference) record of 0-2.
Last time out, the Brown and Gold lost to Bowling Green 75-69 on Saturday, January 6.
Kaitlyn Zarycki led all scorers with 23 points and set a new season-best second-straight game of at least 20 points scored. Over her last seven games, Zarycki has bolstered the offensive front by averaging 21.1 points per game (ppg). Zarycki also paces the Broncos in a plethora of categories: The guard from Niles, Michigan leads the Brown and Gold in scoring (17.8 ppg), rebounds per game (4.8 rpg), and steals per game (2.1 spg). She also leads the team in field goal percentage at 48.1% (minimum nine games played). In the conference, Zarycki is ranked third in the MAC with 17.8 ppg, and tied for fourth with 2.1 spg.
Entering Wednesday's tilt, the Broncos will look to capitalize on their three-point prowess, in which they rank fourth in the MAC in team three-point percentage, and fifth in three-pointers made. Leading the Brown and Gold from downtown is redshirt sophomore
Maggie Stutelberg, who paces the conference with 3.4 threes per game. Stutelburg is also fourth in the MAC with a three-point percentage of 45.6% and is 17th in the MAC with 1.3 spg.
As for the Rockets, after starting the 2023-24 campaign 1-2, the group has caught fire by winning eight of their last nine contests. The Rockets are led by senior guard Sophia Wiard (15.1 ppg), who has accumulated 20 points or more in four of her past five games. Wiard currently ranks fourth in the MAC in scoring, fourth in free throw percentage (84.4%), ninth in three-point percentage (38.9%).
In the all-time series, Toledo enters the matchup with a three-game winning streak over the Broncos. The women's basketball team will be looking for their first win over Toledo since February 22, 2020, where they defeated the Rockets 70-58 at Savage Arena.
