Broncos Net Six Goals in Victory Over Lindenwood

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Western Michigan hockey team completed a sweep of Lindenwood by capturing a 6-1 victory over the Lions Saturday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center.

Alex Bump and Dylan Wendt provided multi-goal games, while Ethan Phillips and Sam Colangelo each had a goal of their own. Carter Berger and Luke Grainger each tallied three assists.

FIRST PERIOD
Western Michigan had a fast start to the game, scoring in the opening minute. Bump, Berger and Sam Sjolund passed the puck around until Bump eventually ripped a shot by Lions goalie Trent Burnham for a 1-0 lead.

Only a few minutes later, Grainger slid a pass to a streaking Wendt on the right side, and he buried it into the back of the net for a 2-0 WMU lead not even four minutes into the game.

A couple minutes later, Lindenwood was sent to the box, giving WMU the first power play of the game. Colangelo, Berger and Tim Washe all got shots on net, but Burnham was able to keep it a two-goal game.

Western Michigan would get two more chances on the power play as the period progressed, but Burnham would keep the puck out of the net for the remainder of the period. Late in the period, Cameron Rowe was able to make a sprawling pad save to help WMU carry a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

SECOND PERIOD
The second 20 minutes began with a great look from Daniel Hilsendager that just went over the net followed by a great save from Rowe on the other end. However, the Lions would get on the board just over eight minutes into the period to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of WMU.

A couple minutes later, Lindenwood was sent off for tripping, and the Broncos made the Lions pay. After a shot from Washe was saved, the puck moved all the way around to Phillips who fired a shot over the shoulder of Burnham to reestablish WMU's two-goal advantage.

Not even a minute later, the Lions went back to the box. This time for roughing. Again, WMU was able to take advantage, with Grainger sliding a pass to Galambos, who found Bump in front of the net for the goal. That pushed Western Michigan in front 4-1 with about seven minutes to play in the second frame.

Neither team would find much offense as the period ticked down, and the Broncos carried a three-goal lead into the final 20 minutes of action.

THIRD PERIOD
Grainger and Galambos opened the period with shots in the opening minute. That was followed by a look from Cassetti that Burnham was just able to get a piece of.

Just over eight minutes into the third frame, WMU was sent off for goaltender interference. However, the Broncos were able to kill that off with relative ease.

From there, Lindenwood went to the box for roughing. The first shot of the man advantage went in for WMU, with the Broncos playing tic-tac-toe out in front. Grainger hit Bump who then found Wendt for his second goal of the game. That made the score 5-1 in favor of the visitors.

Down the stretch, WMU was awarded a penalty shot, which was taken by Colangelo. He stepped up and beat Burnham to make it a 6-1 game with 13 seconds left. WMU went on to finish off the win and series sweep.
