Hockey Falls to Colorado College in Overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team dropped its series opener, 2-1, against Colorado College Friday night at Lawson Arena.

Dylan Wendt provided the lone goal for the Broncos, while Alex Bump and Samuel Sjolund picked up assists. Goaltender Cameron Rowe made 29 saves.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos got off to a fast start, getting the first four shots of the night. Sam Colangelo, Cole Crusberg-Roseen, Sjolund and Wyatt Schingoethe had those looks to open the game.

WMU continued its offensive pressure as the game progressed and eventually earned a power play with under eight minutes to go in the first frame. Colorado College did well to kill most of the penalty, but Wendt tallied his 19th goal of the season with one second left on the man advantage.

Western Michigan carried that that one-goal lead into the second 20 minutes of action.

SECOND PERIOD
Just over six minutes into the second frame, the Tigers were able to even the score at 1-1, as they tipped a puck in front of the net. As the game progressed to the middle portion of the second period, WMU began to find its offensive flow once again.

Hugh Larkin, Jacob Bauer and Colangelo each had strong looks on CC goaltender Kaidan Mbereko, but the Tigers were able to keep the game even. At the end of the period, Western Michigan was assessed a charging penalty, but Rowe and the WMU defense were able to keep the game tied going into the third period.

THIRD PERIOD
Both teams came out with high energy to begin the third, with each team getting a strong chance in the opening minutes of the third frame. Still, neither team could generate a goal as the game moved to the middle of the third period.

After the first media timeout of the third frame, Bump and Crusberg-Roseen each got chances on Mbereko, but he was again able to stand tall in net and keep the game tied. Down the stretch, neither team would generate the game-winning goal and overtime was needed to decide the game.

OVERTIME
After winning the opening faceoff, Colorado College netted a goal 15 seconds into the overtime period to win the game 2-1. Western Michigan received a point in the conference standings.
