Hockey Drops Overtime Battle to Colorado College

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team was upended in overtime, 2-1, against Colorado College Saturday night at Lawson Arena.

The Broncos' lone goal of the night came from freshman Alex Bump. Assists went to Jacob Bauer and Luke Grainger. Goaltender Cameron Rowe made 21 saves in the game.

FIRST PERIOD
After a fast start to the game, Colorado College was able to open the scoring just under five minutes into the first period. However, from there, the Broncos would get three of the next four shots as the game moved to the middle portion of the first 20 minutes.

Eventually, the Tigers were sent off for tripping, giving WMU the game's first look on the power play. Bump had two shots on the man advantage, while Samuel Sjolund and Sam Colangelo each got a look on CC's Kaidan Mbereko. However, he and the Tigers' defense would get back to full strength and carry a one-goal lead into the second frame.

SECOND PERIOD
After playing 4-on-4 in the opening portion of the second 20 minutes, Western Michigan was able to earn another power play. CC was sent off for high sticking.

On the man advantage, WMU would get three shots, but the Tigers would again eventually get back to even strength. However, not even a minute after the power play expired, Bump was able to light the lamp and tie the game at 1-1.

Down the stretch of the period, Western Michigan got another great chance, as Dylan Wendt nearly put the Broncos in front. After a review, it was determined that his shot hit the post and did not fully cross the goal line. The two teams entered the third period tied at 1-1.

THIRD PERIOD
Just over six minutes into the third frame, the Brown and Gold got another look on the power play. Zak Galambos got the best look for the Broncos, but Mbereko and the Tigers were able to kill of the penalty.

WMU killed off a CC power play in the middle portion of the third period and eventually went back on the man advantage with under five minutes to play. The Broncos got two shots from Colangelo and one from Galambos.

CC would get back to full strength, and the two teams would go to overtime for the second night in a row.

OVERTIME
WMU started overtime with a faceoff win and got the first two shots of the extra period. However, just as he did last night, CC's Noah Laba netted the game-winning goal to secure a 2-1 victory for the Tigers.
