BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Western Michigan junior forward
Owen Lobsinger hit a career-high seven three-pointers and tied his career high with 25 points in an 84-79 setback at Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon.
Lobsinger made 9-of-12 from the floor and went a perfect 7-for-7 from downtown to match his career high of 25 points. By going a perfect 7-for-7 from three-point percentage, Lobsinger established a new single-game program record for three-pointers in a game without a miss. The seven three-pointers hit by the junior were two shy of the overall record for made three's in a single game.
Three other players scored in double-figures for Western Michigan (7-11, 4-2 MAC), including
Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro, who went 8-for-14 to net a new season-high 18 points.
Javonte Brown and
JaVaughn Hannah each tallied 10 points off of the bench for the second consecutive game.
In addition to his scoring exploits, Lobsinger led WMU on the glass with seven rebounds.
B. Artis White handed out a team-high five assists, while De La Cruz Monegro collected four helpers.
Western Michigan got out to a fast start, as it netted seven of the game's first eight points on the way to a 16-3 burst in the first six-and-a-half minutes of the contest. Bowling Green (14-4, 5-1) responded with the next 14 points to move ahead, 17-16, just past the midway point of the period.
The Broncos reestablished a five-point cushion after Lobsinger's second three-pointer of the afternoon, 22-17, but an 8-0 BGSU response put the hosts back on top, 25-22, at the 6:32 mark. Leading 33-31, the Falcons tallied the final six points of the period to take a 39-31 advantage into the locker room.
BGSU extended the margin into double-figures in the early portion of the second half, but Western Michigan countered with a 7-0 run to shrink the gap back to three, 43-40, with 15:41 to play. The Falcons remained in front, and eventually built their lead as high as 62-46 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
WMU refused to go away, using a 10-1 run to slash the margin down to five, 67-62, and eventually working it all the way down to one, 72-71, with just under two-and-a-half minutes on the clock. After a couple of offensive rebounds, the Falcons scored on the ensuing possession, but Brown answered with a thunderous dunk to once again bring the Broncos to within one, 74-73, with 90 seconds to go. Bowling Green countered with another basket, and this time Western Michigan could not answer, enabling the hosts to put the game away from the free throw line.
The Broncos made 45.1 percent (32-of-71) of their field goals for the afternoon, including 52.6 percent (20-of-38) in the second half. Western Michigan also made over half of its three-point tries, clocking in at 52.6 percent (10-of-19). BGSU was limited to 39.1 percent (27-of-69) from the floor and just 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from long range.
