KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Behind four double-digit scorers and a strong defensive effort, the Western Michigan men's basketball team took care of business on its home floor on Tuesday night as it knocked off Eastern Michigan, 73-56.
Four players netted double-digit points for the Broncos (8-11, 5-2 MAC), led by
Seth Hubbard's 15 points. Joining Hubbard with 10 or more were
B. Artis White (13),
Anthony Crump (10) and
Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro (10).
Owen Lobsinger paced Western Michigan on the glass with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Crump grabbed 10 boards to secure his second double-double of the season.
Defensively, WMU set a host of season lows, including points allowed with 56. The Brown and Gold limited Eastern Michigan (8-11, 1-6) to 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the floor and 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from three-point range, with the field goal percentage, three-point percentage and made three-pointers all new season lows allowed by the Western Michigan defense. The 21 field goals tied for the fewest allowed by the Broncos to date this season.
Both offenses struggled in the early going, with Western Michigan scratching out a 12-7 edge just over eight minutes into the game. At 17-12, the Broncos put together an 11-3 stretch to extend their cushion into double-figures for the first time, 28-15, with a little more than three minutes remaining in the period.
The Eagles answered with the next five, but a
JaVaughn Hannah triple sent WMU into the break with a 31-20 lead. The 20 points netted by Eastern Michigan in the first half were the fewest scored in any half by a Western Michigan opponent so far this season. The Broncos also limited the visitors to just 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from the field and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from distance in the opening 20 minutes.
Western Michigan kept its advantage in double-digits until a four-point spurt got Eastern Michigan to within nine, 42-33, at the 13:41 mark. The Brown and Gold responded with a 9-0 run to extend the lead out to 51-33 just past the midway point of the half.
EMU got as close as 14, 56-42, with 5:53 to play, but runs of 6-0 and 7-0 helped the Broncos build a 22-point cushion, with an emphatic Crump slam serving as the exclamation point and making it 69-47 with 2:27 remaining.
After a cool start, Western Michigan rebounded to shoot over 55.0 percent in the second half and post a 46.7 percent (28-of-60) field goal percentage for the game. The Brown and Gold dominated on the glass to the tune of a 48-36 advantage.
The Broncos continue their homestand on Saturday afternoon as they welcome rival Central Michigan to University Arena for a 1 pm tip.
