Women’s Hoops Travels To Buffalo For Weekend Matchup

BUFFALO, NYThe Western Michigan women's basketball team travels to Buffalo, New York, to take on University at Buffalo Saturday, January 20, at 2:00 PM. The game will be streamed on ESPN+. 

Last time out, the Brown and Gold snapped their losing skid with a victory over Ohio University for their first conference win of the season. In the victory, Kaitlyn Zarycki (30 points) and Hannah Spitzley (19 points) led all scorers with a combined 49 points on the evening. Entering the contest, Zarycki is one of three players at the division one level to average 50/40/90 while playing at least 75% of possible games so far this season. As for Spitzley, over her last two outings, she has ramped up her scoring production, averaging 15 points per game and knocking down a total of four three pointers while shooting a 57.2% clip from distance. Overall, Spitzley and the Broncos travel to Buffalo with the third most made three pointers in the MAC with 7.2 per game. 

This past Wednesday, MAC Player of the Week Chellia Watson recorded her first double-double by scoring a game-high 27 points and added 11 rebounds in UB's road victory at Northern Illinois University. Over her last eight games, Watson has averaged an impressive 26.6 points per game. As a team, the Bulls are ranked inside the top three in the MAC in scoring defense (63.2 ppg), field goal percentage (.424), field goal defense (.377), three-point field goal percentage (.335) and 3FG defense (.288). 

Saturday will mark the 32nd meeting between the two programs, with WMU entering the contest trailing 18-13 in the all-time series. The Broncos will look to avenge their season ending loss to Buffalo in 2022 tomorrow. In their last matchup, then junior Spitzley led WMU with a game-high 18 points after going 7-18 from the field and 4-11 from the three-point range.  

After the conclusion of the game, the Broncos will return home to prepare for a matchup against the University of Akron on Wednesday, January 24, at 7:00 PM.
