Broncos Lose Close Battle Against Wisconsin

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season this afternoon, falling to Wisconsin in a tightly-contested game. Wisconsin edged the Broncos 2-1 and moved to 3-1-2 on the season, while the Broncos' record fell to 3-1-0.

"We knew today was going to be a difficult challenge and Wisconsin would be a quality opponent in all areas, and they definitely were," head coach Lewis Robinson said. "I felt we gave a good showing for the majority of the game and made it difficult for them. We didn't really click as much in the goal boxes as we would like to in order to convert our chances, but overall there are a lot of positives we can take from the game and keep improving."

FIRST HALF
The Broncos earned the first shot on goal of the game, as Emily Pagett flicked a ball on net in the opening 10 minutes. However, just a few minutes after that shot, Wisconsin's Aryssa Mahrt broke through the WMU defense and dropped a pass off to Maia Richters, who found the back of the net for the game's first goal.

Following that goal, WMU would get shots on net from Madi Canada and Brielle Gomez, as the Broncos showed some offensive life. The offensive intensity wouldn't materialize, however, as the Badgers carried the one-goal lead into half.

SECOND HALF
The Brown and Gold started the second half on the attack, earning the first three shots of the second 45 minutes. But similar to the first half, the Badgers would find the back of the net just over 10 minutes into the second half. A ball was sent into the box and batted around before finding the foot of Ashley Martinez, who put Wisconsin up 2-0.

As the game moved to the later stages, WMU once again found some offensive life, with Drew Martin sending a beautiful pass in the box that was headed in by Reagan Wisser to bring the Broncos back within one. The goal was Wisser's first of the season.

Down the stretch, Jenna Blackburn would get two more shots, but neither would find the back of the net, and the Badgers would go on to win by a final score of 2-1. The Broncos outshot the Badgers 10-8 and the shots on goal were even at 5-5. Corner kicks were tied at four apiece, and Erin McKinney led the game with four saves. WMU's Lauren Boafo collected three saves in the game.

UP NEXT
After going 1-1 in their two-game home stand, the Broncos will head back on the road for a three-game trip that includes games against Oakland, Michigan and Marquette. WMU will play at Oakland on Sept. 7 at 7 PM.
