Women's Soccer Records Shutout at Oakland

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team improved to 4-1-0 on Thursday evening after earning a 3-0 victory at Oakland. The Broncos received goals from Emily Pagett, Abby Werthman and Bria Telemaque in the victory.

"We are really pleased with the progress we have made this week on our attacking game and being more clinical," head coach Lewis Robinson said. "In the second half tonight, we showed our strengths in attack and really caused them problems. We were very happy with the quality goals we scored and chances that we created all game, and we will take a lot of confidence from these moments moving forward. Our players have worked really hard this week in this area, so it is very rewarding to see it pay off in the game as we continue to improve."

FIRST HALF
The Broncos came out and controlled the play from the beginning and put the pressure on the Golden Grizzlies' defense. Jen Blitchok opened the game with a great look, but it was blocked in the opening 10 minutes. Just a few minutes later, Jenna Blackburn and Madison Cotta each had looks on net that just sailed high. Blackburn put the first shot on goal of the game, but Oakland keeper Julia Zangerl made a solid save to keep the game tied.

As the game progressed to the middle portion of the first half, the Broncos got a great look, as Heidi Thomasma hit the crossbar and Stephanie Currie headed a ball to the far post. However, Zangerl was able to make another diving stop to maintain the tie game. The two teams would head to halftime tied 0-0.

SECOND HALF
Not much changed in the second half, with Western Michigan continuing to control play. In the opening minutes of the second half, Blackburn carried the ball into the attacking zone and played a nice ball to Blitchok on the right side of the field. Blitchok then crossed the ball into the box, and Pagett knocked it into the back of the net for the game's first goal.

Just minutes later, Drew Martin played a beautiful through ball to Werthman who put a shot on net that bounced around and eventually ended up beating the keeper. The goal was Werthman's first of the season and put WMU ahead 2-0. Oakland finally found some offense in the 60th minute, but their lone shot of the game would sail high of the net.

After Oakland's chance, the Brown and Gold went right back on the attack and found more offensive chances. It wasn't until the 84th minute, however, that the Broncos would strike again. This time it was Telemaque who found the back of the net on a rocket from 30 yards out. That was her second goal of the season, and the Broncos would go on to win by a final score of 3-0, improving their record to 4-1-0.

WMU outshot Oakland 22-1, including an 11 shots on goal to zero advantage. The Broncos had three corner kicks in the game and Lauren Boafo collected her third shutout of the season.
