KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Through doubles and singles, the Western Michigan women's tennis team opened the 2023-24 season with a total of 15 wins on the opening day of the Betsy Kuhle Invitational at WMU's Sorensen Courts on Friday.
Lindsey Zieglar, Valeria Monko, Karin Hamilton, Polina Khotko, Ariana Souligny, Audrey Smitek, and Julia Frazier all picked up two-set wins in singles. Freshman Sofia Balsera needed three sets to earn her first collegiate victory. Frazier also picked up her first singles win of her career, while Khotko earned her first win as a Bronco.
The Broncos picked up six wins in doubles. Zieglar and Monko, who were WMU's top doubles pair last season, picked up two wins on the day, going 6-1 against Michigan State's pairing of Martinez and Schiffman. The ladies then earned a 6-2 win over Ovcharoval and Minich from Youngstown State. Hamilton and Khotko picked up a 6-2 win over Hamond and Hultqvist from Oakland, with Hamilton later pairing with Maya Perkucin for a 6-4 win over Milwuakee's Razel and Steiskalova. WMU's two sophomores, Smitek and Souligny, picked up a 6-3 win over Marquette's Winduchler and Badawi. The pair later on beat Beasley and Oliveira from Youngstown State, 6-2. WMU paired its freshmen, Fazier and Balsera, picked up two wins against Oakland and a split pair from Milwuakee and MSU.
The Broncos are back at it on Saturday at Sorensen Courts. Admission is free.
