Broncos Dispatch Falcons in Straight Sets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In its first home game in over a month, the Western Michigan volleyball team kept its roll going, as it took down Bowling Green in straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-19) on Thursday evening at University Arena. With the win, the Broncos move to 3-0 in MAC play for the second time in the last three years.

On the strength of 36 assists from Logan Case, Western Michigan hit .271 for the evening, with Maggie King's 13 kills leading the way for the Brown & Gold. Anna Calcagno was also in double-figures, as the senior put down 12 kills.
 
On the defensive end, Andelyn Simkins collected a match-high 16 digs, while Reeghan Boyer contributed 11 digs to the cause. Calcagno came up just shy of a double-double, as she picked up nine digs. The Broncos totaled nine blocks in the contest, getting five each from King (1 solo, 4 assists) and Amanda Glanton (5 assists). King's five total blocks equaled her career high.
 
Western Michigan came out hot, posting the first five points of the evening. A 4-1 Bowling Green spurt cut the margin to two, 11-9. WMU built the margin back to five, 16-11, before a 6-2 run brought the Falcons to within one, 18-17. With the Broncos leading 23-21, Calcagno delivered back-to-back kills to put the first set away for the Brown & Gold.
 
The Falcons notched the first three points of the second frame, but WMU responded with seven in a row to open up a 7-3 edge. Bowling Green worked its way back even at 10-10, and then regained the lead at 13-12. With BGSU on top 14-13, the Broncos rattled off four in a row to move back ahead, 17-14. The Falcons closed the gap to one at 17-16, but Western Michigan stayed in front for the remainder of the frame, with Calcagno once again delivering the decisive kill.
 
The Broncos notched the first six points of the third set as they roared out to an 8-1 start. With the margin at 10-5, Western Michigan put together a 7-2 run to expand its cushion to 17-7. The Falcons charged back to within four, 22-18, but WMU tallied three of the final four points of the evening for its third consecutive straight-set victory.
