KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up three doubles wins and eight singles wins at the opening day of the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational at the Broncos' home Sorensen Courts on Friday.
Double action kicked things off early in the day. Jackson Boone and Drew Evans defeated Konakanchi and Singh from Butler, 6-3. Ferdinand Schlueter and Matej Kajzer earned a 6-0 win over Arts and Lama from Butler, while Ashton Adesoro and Dimitri Moriarty wrapped up doubles with a 7-6 (8-6) win over Butler's Joss and William.
Kajzer, Adesoro, Boone and Moriarty all picked up wins in the first round of singles. Kajzer defeated Favier from Youngstown State 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5), Adesoro also defeated his counterpart Dabas from YSU 6-2, 6-4. Boone picked up a 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6) victory over the Penguins' Balci, while Moriarty advanced over YSU's Balci 6-1, 6-2. In the second round, Moriarty, Kajzer, Adesoro and Evans each picked up wins. Moriarty defeated William from Butler, 6-3, 6-4. Kajzer defeated Moser from DePaul 6-4, 6-3. Adesoro earned a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) over Iaquinto from DePaul. After dropping his first match, Evans earned a 6-3, 7-5 win over Gitschel from the Blue Demons.
Over at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, senior Benjamin George and junior Anton Arzhankin both went 1-1 in singles play and earned a win together in doubles.
The Broncos are back it on Saturday morning for the doubles and singles finals, beginnings at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free.
