WMU Sweeps Weekly Volleyball Awards for Second Time in 2023

CLEVELAND – For the second time in the first three weeks of the season, the Western Michigan volleyball team has swept the MAC West Division Player of the Week awards, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. WMU's Logan Case claimed the Setter of the Week award, Keona Salesman earned the Offensive Player of the Week honor and Andelyn Simkins was named the Defensive Player of the Week.  
 
Case was named the MAC West Setter of the Week for the third consecutive week to start the 2023 campaign. The senior racked up 139 assists (11.58/set) and added 29 digs (2.42/set) to help WMU capture the Kennesaw State Invitational title over the weekend. On Friday against Mississippi State, Case handed out a season-high 56 assists and added 13 digs for her second double-double of the season. In that contest, she also became the third Bronco in program history to surpass 4,000 career assists. The Maineville, Ohio, native registered 45 assists in Saturday's win over Wake Forest and totaled 38 more in Sunday's straight-set win over Kennesaw State. On Sunday, Case moved up into second on WMU's career assists list.
 
Like Case, Salesman was honored as MAC West Offensive Player of the Week for the third week in a row. The senior continued her hot start to the season with three more double-digit kill performances at the Kennesaw State Invitational. For the weekend, she totaled 52 kills (4.33/set) and 53.5 points (4.46/set) on a .339 hitting percentage. Salesman opened the weekend with a career-high 23 kills in Friday's contest against Mississippi State. The Coldwater, Mich., native picked up 12 kills while hitting .324 in a four-set win over Wake Forest on Saturday, and then closed out the week with 17 kills on a blistering .517 hitting percentage in Sunday's sweep of Kennesaw State.
 
Simkins earned the Defensive Player of the Week award for the second time this season. She racked up 64 digs (5.33/set) and successfully received 63-of-65 opponent serves (.969) to help the Broncos limit their opponents to a .193 hitting percentage over the weekend. In addition to her defensive exploits, Simkins also contributed 12 assists (1.00/set) and four service aces (0.33/set) for WMU. The senior opened the weekend with 29 digs, five assists and a pair of aces on Friday against Mississippi State. The Schoolcraft, Mich., native added 17 digs in Saturday's four-set win over Wake Forest and 18 more in Sunday's straight-set win over Kennesaw State.
 
The 9-1 Broncos wrap up their non-conference schedule this weekend at the Alyssa Cavanaugh Classic in Bowling Green, Ky. WMU takes on ETSU on Friday and tournament host Western Kentucky on Saturday.
