Broncos Win Kennesaw State Invitational with Sweep of Owls

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Western Michigan volleyball team captured its third straight non-conference tournament title, winning the Kennesaw State Invitational with a straight-set victory (25-23, 25-12, 25-15) over the hosts, Kennesaw State, on Sunday afternoon.

With her 38 assists on Sunday, Logan Case climbed into second on Western Michigan's career assists list. The senior now has 4,110 career helpers, and passed Kris Penza's (1990-93) career total of 4,082. Mary Murphy (2015-18) owns the program record with 4,501 career assists. 
 
Keona Salesman led the attack for Western Michigan, tallying 17 kills on a blistering .517 hitting percentage. Maggie King added 10, while Anna Calcagno chipped in with eight. Western Michigan hit .280 as a team for the afternoon.
 
Andelyn Simkins registered a match-high 18 digs for the Broncos, while Case added nine, narrowly missing out on her second double-double of the weekend. Reeghan Boyer and Calcagno each contributed seven digs to WMU's defensive effort.
 
A 7-1 run helped Kennesaw State take a 15-11 advantage in the first set. Trailing 19-16, Western Michigan notched four consecutive points to move back ahead, 20-19. At 23-23, King broke the deadlock with a kill, and a KSU error then handed the Broncos the first set, 25-23.
 
Holding a 5-4 edge in the second set, WMU used a 10-3 surge to open up a 15-7 cushion. With the margin at 19-11, the Broncos closed out the frame with six of the next seven points to take a 2-0 match lead into the break.
 
The Broncos continued their momentum into the third set, as they jumped out to a 6-1 advantage. A seven-point run then helped Western Michigan expand the margin out to 14-3. WMU's cushion dipped below double-digits just twice for the remainder of the frame, as the Brown & Gold cruised to the straight-set victory.
 
Western Michigan wraps up non-conference play next weekend with a pair of matches at the Alyssa Cavanaugh Classic in Bowling Green, Ky. The Broncos are set to take on ETSU at 2 pm on Friday afternoon and tournament host Western Kentucky on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
