Cross Country and Track & Field Adds Six Distance Runners

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Head coach Kevin Cataldo and the Western Michigan cross country and track and field program are excited to announce the addition of six athletes to the program. The new additions include: Danielle Rinn, Chloe Nixon, Madison Clor, Lillian Zelasko, Rebekah Asselin and Larissa McGrath

Rebekah Asselin | Freshman | Bedord, Mich.
Asselin comes to Kalamazoo after a great career at Bedford High School. During her time there, she was an All-Region honoree as well as an SEC All-League selection. She was named the team MVP for both track and cross country. Asselin also performs well in the classroom, as she was named to the Michigan Academic All-State Team. In her senior cross country season, Asselin posted five top-15 finishes, including an 11th place-finish at the conference championship meet and a 10th-place finish at the regional meet.

CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"Bekah has a good amount of foot speed and will add to our middle distance group. One thing I really like about her is that she has shown she can help out on the cross country course too. I'm definitely excited to help continue her progression as an athlete in all three seasons."

Madison Clor | Freshman | Romeo, Mich.
Clor has been excellent on the track and in the classroom, collecting All-State honors three times, while adding Academic All-State accolades on four occasions. Additionally, Clor has been named All-Region, All-County and is a four-time state qualifier in cross country. In track and field, she was a three-time regional champion in the 4x800 relay and an All-State honoree in that same event. She was also the regional champion in the 3200-meter run and the county champion in the 1600-meter run.

CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"Maddie will be an asset in cross country right away. She was a top-10 runner at the Division 1 State Meet here in Michigan as well as the Mideast Cross Country Championships in Ohio this past year. She has been nothing but consistent. Her personality/mindset is exactly what we are looking for in this program."

Larissa McGrath | Freshman | Cedar Springs, Mich.
McGrath had an excellent career at Cedar Springs and capped off her senior high school season with a PR in the 5000-meter run (19:10.1). During her final season, she tallied 11 top-15 finishes, eight top-10 finishes and three top-five finishes. She placed eighth at the OK Gold Championships and finished 11th at the regional meet. She is a two-time All-Conference selection in cross country and earned the honor once in track and field.

CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"Larissa is still very new to the sport and has a lot of potential. This past spring was the first year she didn't play soccer and just her second year of running track, leading to multiple personal bests this spring. I am eager to get her in out training system to see what she is capable of."

Chloe Nixon | Freshman | Rochester Hills, Mich.
Nixon posted strong results for Rochester High School, especially during her senior season. In total, she was an All-American for the indoor 5,000-meter run and earned All-State honors in the 4x800 relay. She was also a four-time OAA Scholar Athlete in cross country and collected the same honor three times in track and field. During her senior cross country season, Nixon finished in the top 15 in seven of her nine meets. She finished second at the regional meet and finished in the top-45 at the MHSAA Division 1 Finals. She also tallied a third-place finish at the OAA White Championships.

CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"Chloe had a breakout year on the track this spring finishing fifth in the 5K at Nike Indoor Nationals and ninth in the 5K at Nike Outdoor Nationals. She is a versatile runner that will add to the depth of our program. I am excited to work with her and continue to develop her as an athlete at the next level."

Danielle Rinn | Graduate Student | Lincoln Neb.
Rinn comes to Western Michigan after spending last season at Oklahoma. She also had four years at Wichita State before that. She will bring a veteran presence to both the cross country and track and field teams. During her time in college, she has posted solid times, with her 6K PR sitting at 21:36.3. In track and field, she has competed in the 800-meter run (2:17.81), the mile (5:00.53), 5K (17:21.49), 1500-meter run (4:27.70), 3K (9:55.88) and 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:01.27). During last year's Big 12 XC Championships, Rinn placed 57th with a time of 23:18.

CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"I'm excited about adding Danielle's ability and experience to our roster. She spent the last year competing in the Big 12 conference and knows what to do when competing in high level competition. She will add immediate depth to our cross country roster and help out on the track in events 1500m and up."

Lillian Zelasko | Freshman | North Liberty, Ind.
Zelasko proved herself as one of the best distance runners in the state of Indiana during her senior season. In seven meets, she never finished lower than 21st, winning four times and finishing in the top-two six times. She claimed first place at sectionals, regionals and semi-state before claiming 21st at the IHSAA State Cross Country Championships. Her PR came during regional action, where Zelasko posted a time of 17:55.6. During her high school career, she was a two-time All-State honoree in XC and four time team MVP. Additionally, Zelasko is a semi-state champion, two-time regional champion, and three-time conference champion. She holds the 5K regional record and was a two-time track state qualifier.

CATALDO'S COMMENTS
"Lilly is one of the top cross country runners in the state of Indiana. She was in the top three of the bulk of her races this past fall including a third-place finish at the Mideast Cross Country Championships in Ohio. I think she has tremendous ability on the grass and will aid in the longer distance events on the track."
