KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball program and head coach
Dwayne Stephens have announced the signing of Northern Illinois transfer Anthony Crump.
A native of Inkster, Mich., Crump has one year of eligibility remaining and will suit up for the Broncos for the 2023-24 season. He joins junior college transfers Brandon Muntu (Triton College) and Markhi Strickland (Victoria College), as well as incoming freshman Michael Sulaka (Macomb, Mich.) among WMU's newcomers for next season.
"We are excited Anthony is a Bronco," Coach Stephens said. "He brings a lot of experience to our program having played in over 100 college games. He adds length and athleticism to our roster and can play multiple positions. Anthony is a great person who is going to compete every day. He will play a big role in our success next season."
Crump comes to Western Michigan with a wealth of experience, having played in 113 total games over the course of his collegiate career at Middle Tennessee State and Northern Illinois. He spent the last three seasons at NIU, where he appeared in a total of 79 contests and made 67 starts.
This past season, Crump started 31 of the 32 games he played in and averaged career bests in both points (7.7) and rebounds (5.1), while shooting 61.2 percent from the field. His 5.1 rebounds per game led the Huskies and ranked 17th in the Mid-American Conference. In league play, he upped his averages to 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Crump tied for ninth in the MAC with his 5.8 rebounding average and was fifth in the conference in field goal percentage at 62.4 in league games. He tallied three double-doubles for the season, all in league play.
During the 2021-22 campaign, Crump saw action in 30 games, starting 25 for the Huskies. He averaged 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds, and recorded his first career double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) in a season-opening win at Washington. In his first season at NIU, he racked up 4.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game across 17 appearances, 11 of which were starts.
Crump began his collegiate career at Middle Tennessee State. He played in nine games, starting seven, as a freshman in 2018-19 before his season was abruptly ended by an injury. Crump came back the next year to appear in 25 games off of the MTSU bench. During his time as a Blue Raider, he was a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
In high school, Crump was a two-time captain and two-time team MVP under head coach Mike Soukup at Plymouth High School. As a senior, he averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and 1.5 steals on the way to earning First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State accolades. When he signed at MTSU, he became Plymouth's first Division I basketball signee.
