BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team dropped its first road game of the season, 91-82, at Campbell on Sunday afternoon.
Jalen Griffith led Western Michigan (1-2) with 19 points in the contest and also handed out a career-high seven assists. Joining Griffith in double-figures for the Brown and Gold were
Trey Lewis and
Declan Peterson, who netted 10 points apiece. Peterson's 10 points came on 5-for-5 shooting from the field. Lewis and
Michael Sulaka paced WMU on the glass with six rebounds apiece.
The Broncos started the game with a flourish, as Griffith lobbed one up to
Jayden Brewer who threw it down with authority for the game's first points. Campbell (1-2) came back with an 11-4 run to take an 11-6 edge. Western Michigan counterpunched with seven in a row, and
Hudson Ward capped the run with a three-pointer to put WMU in front, 13-11, with 12 minutes remaining in the opening period.
With the contest even at 19-19, the Fighting Camels put together a 17-6 surge to open up a 36-25 advantage, the largest margin of the first half. Western Michigan worked it down to as little as three, 37-34, in the final minute, and Campbell took a 39-34 edge into the locker room.
Brewer again made the first bucket of the half, getting WMU within 39-36 on the first possession after the break. At 47-43, Campbell used an 11-3 run to stretch the lead back into double-figures, 58-46, just shy of the period's halfway mark. The two teams proceeded to trade baskets for the vast majority of the second half, with the Broncos closing the gap to seven on several occasions, but never able to work their way any closer.
Western Michigan went 28-of-64 (43.8 percent) from the floor and 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) from the free throw line for the afternoon, while Campbell connected on 25-of-54 (46.3 percent) of its field goal attempts.
