BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Western Michigan softball team opened Mid-American Conference play by securing a 4-2 victory against Bowling Green on Wednesday afternoon. It was the first MAC victory for first year Bronco head coach
Jenny Rohn.
The WMU offense was led by a trio of multi-hit efforts, as
Courtney Farrish,
Payton Kelly and
Taylor Wolfe collected two knocks apiece.
Western Michigan got started early with a two-run single by Farrish in the top of the first inning. BGSU followed with a run in the bottom of the first to close the lead, 2-1.
Leading off in the top of the third, Kelly sent a bomb over the left field wall to put another run on the board for the Broncos. In the circle,
Autumn Godwin retired the Falcons in order heading into the fourth.
Haley Boxwell notched her third homer of the season in the top of the sixth with a rocket launched over the left field wall.
WMU threatened again in the top of the seventh, but was turned away by the Falcons and left two runners on base.
Rissa Bajusz sealed the deal for Western Michigan by retiring seven of the eight batters she faced to collect the save. Bajusz collected five strikeouts.
Godwin earned the win and moved her record to 4-4. She went 4.2 innings and allowed four hits, two runs, one of which was earned, and picked up four strikeouts.
The Broncos conclude the BGSU series on Wednesday, March 29, with a doubleheader starting at 11:30 am. Both games can be followed through live stats and the BG Falcon Media radio broadcast.
