AKRON, Ohio – The Western Michigan men's basketball team closed out its regular season road schedule with an 81-64 loss at Akron on Saturday night.
Seth Hubbard continued his recent hot streak for the Broncos (7-22, 3-13 MAC) by going six-for-10, including four-of-seven from downtown, for a team-high 19 points.
Lamar Norman Jr. added 17 points and a team-high five assists for WMU.
Tray Maddox Jr. contributed 11 points and led Western Michigan with six rebounds.
Akron (20-9, 12-4) got out to a 12-6 edge in the early stages, but the Broncos charged back with eight in a row to move ahead, 14-12, with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening period. The Zips countered with an eight-point spurt of their own to regain the lead, but Norman tied the contest at 23-23 with a triple at the 5:55 mark. Akron surged back in front with the next 12 consecutive points and carried a 35-25 advantage into the intermission.
A 12-2 start saw Akron build its lead up to 47-27 in the opening minutes of the second stanza. WMU countered with an 11-2 run to draw to within 11, 49-38, with a little more than 12 minutes to play. Another Akron surge gave the hosts their largest lead of the night, 75-52, with three minutes to play.
The Broncos shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field and made 12 three-pointers, one shy of their season high. Akron connected on 52.7 percent (29-of-55) of its field goal attempts. Western Michigan edged the Zips, 32-31, on the glass.
