Akron (20-9, 12-4) got out to a 12-6 edge in the early stages, but the Broncos charged back with eight in a row to move ahead, 14-12, with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening period. The Zips countered with an eight-point spurt of their own to regain the lead, but Norman tied the contest at 23-23 with a triple at the 5:55 mark. Akron surged back in front with the next 12 consecutive points and carried a 35-25 advantage into the intermission.
