KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team fell in its penultimate home game of the 2022-23 season, 77-62, to Miami on Tuesday evening at University Arena.
Tray Maddox Jr. led Western Michigan (7-23, 3-14 MAC) in scoring with a game-high 25 points, his highest total as a Bronco.
Owen Lobsinger added 11 points off of the WMU bench.
Titus Wright gathered in a game-high eight rebounds to help the Broncos win the rebounding battle, 36-32, and register a commanding 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass.
Miami (12-18, 6-11) got off to a fast start, as the visitors tallied the first 12 points of the evening. Western Michigan countered with 15 of the contest's next 20 points to get back to within two, 17-15, at the 12:12 mark of the opening period. The RedHawks used a 14-6 stretch to extend their lead back into double-figures, 31-21, in the final minutes of the first half and took a 36-26 advantage into the locker room.
With Miami on top 42-31, Western Michigan used a six-point spurt to shrink the margin down to five, 42-37. WMU got within five again, 46-41, on a Maddox layup, but the visitors countered with the next five points to restore their 10-point cushion, 51-41, with 10:39 remaining.
The difference was six, 53-47, when Miami embarked on a 12-4 run which pushed its advantage to 14, 65-51, with just over four minutes to play. The RedHawks maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Broncos went 23-of-60 (38.3 percent) from the field for the evening, while Miami connected on 25-of-50 (50.0 percent) from the floor. Led by Lobsinger's 11 points, Western Michigan's bench outscored MU's reserves, 16-11.
