Women’s Basketball Begins Homestand on Wednesday Against Toledo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. –  The Western Michigan women's basketball team returns home after its away stretch on Wednesday, Feb. 15 to hose the University of Toledo at 7 pm inside University Arena. Wednesday's matchup will feature WMU women's basketball Play4Kay game, come on out and support while sporting your best shades of pink for the pink out.

THE MATCHUP
The Rockets lead the all-time series between the two teams to head into their 86th meeting. Toledo won its last contest against Western Michigan, 71-53 to lead the away series 32-9. The Rockets hold their home advantage 24-13.

THE ROCKETS (19-4, 10-2 MAC) 
Toledo is currently one game out of first place in the Mid-American Conference standings. The Rockets look to extend their winning streak to seven entering Wednesday's matchup, after a 71-58 victory over Miami on Saturday. 
 
Toledo is the best free throw shooting team in the MAC league, ranking first in free throw percentage (79.1 percent), free throws made per game (16.2), and free throw attempts (20.4). UT ranks seventh in the nation in free throw percentage and 10th in free throws made per game. UT also ranks third in the MAC in scoring offense at 74.0 and second in scoring defense at 62.5.
 
As a unit, Toledo averages 74 PPG on 45 percent shooting from the field. The Rockets average 36.7 rebounds per contest, for a +2.3 rebound margin per game over their opponents. The Rockets average 16.2  free throws per game and knock down 79.1 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe. Additionally, UT dishes out 15.6 assists per contest, while also averaging 6.9 steals per game.
 
Offensively, Sophia Wiard leads the Rockets with 33.2 PPG, and 5.2 RPG, and registers 99 assists on the season. Wiard ranks fourth in the country and leads the MAC with a 2.83 assist/turnover ratio. Sammi Mikonowicz plays hand in hand with Wiard, averaging 32.1 PPG and 7.5 rebounds per contest to lead the Rocket rebounding. Quinesha Lockett, who averages 30.2 PPG on 45.8 percent shooting follows just behind to round out the 30+ average trio. Lockett also averages 4.6 rebounds per game, 0.6 blocks, and 1.3 steals each time out. She enters play on Wednesday with 1,795 career points to rank sixth in Toledo's all-time leading scorers' program record. 

WESTERN MICHIGAN (10-13, 5-7 MAC)
Western Michigan returns home on Wednesday following a road loss at Eastern Michigan by a final score of 68-58. Four Broncos led the scoring in Saturday's contest, Hannah Spitzley topped the scoring with 12 points on 3-for-8 from the field, 2-of-4 from deep, a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the line, and added four rebounds. Taylor Williams and Maddie Watters each added 10 points. Williams went 4-for-16 from the field and 50 percent from the line and tallied seven rebounds and three blocks. Watters went 3-for05 from the field, 2-for-4 beyond the arc, and split free throws. She tallied six rebounds, one assist, and one steal on the day. Megan Wager rounded the scoring out with another 10 points on 3-for-5 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. 
 
As a team, WMU averages 64.2 PPG, shooting 38.9 percent from the field. The Broncos also average 31.8 rebounds each time out. The Broncos average 11.2 attempts from the foul line per game, capitalizing on 66.7 percent of their free throws collectively. Furthermore, WMU serves up 11.9 assists each contest, while swiping 10.1 steals from opponents on average. Western Michigan holds its opponents to just 69.5 PPG.
