KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan track and field team will open its indoor season on Friday afternoon at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open. This marks the second consecutive season the Broncos have competed at the meet.
WMU enters track and field season with a revamped roster that includes some strong veterans and a wealth of newcomers.
Danielle Rinn and
Kayla Schiera will spearhead the distance group after finishing the cross country season as All-MAC performers. Additionally, freshman
Lillian Zelasko was highly touted coming out of high school and will provide some depth in the long-distance events.
The sprints/hurdles/jumps group has a lot of new faces, with just three student-athletes returning from last season (
Claira Gilchrist,
Grace Johnson and
Anichka Malachi). The Broncos added seven newcomers to the group, with Ohio State transfer
Mabinty Kebe, Central Arizona College transfer
Soniya Jones and freshman
Sandra Ferrari looking to make an immediate impact.
On the throws side, three student-athletes are returning from last season (
Kennedy Hagens,
Lane Hagens and
Tess Van Dyk). Freshman
Mariah Sackett and Southern Illinois transfer
BriYanna Robinson are new to the program this season. Van Dyk returns after scoring in the discus at the MAC Outdoor Championships as a freshman, while Robinson will provide a veteran presence for a young group. She is expected to compete for multiple MAC Championships during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
