KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team improved its record to 9-3-1 overall and pushed its winning streak to five games with a 3-1 victory over Lindenwood on Friday night at Lawson Arena.
Luke Grainger,
Tim Washe and
Dylan Wendt provided the goals for the Broncos. Grainger and Wendt produced multi-point games.
FIRST PERIOD
The Brown and Gold came out firing early and often, getting the first three shots of the game.
Sam Colangelo,
Cole Crusberg-Roseen and
Cedric Fiedler were able to get shots on Trent Burnham.
The Broncos continued to pepper shots at Burnham throughout the period, racking up 22 shots int the opening 20 minutes. After a
Joe Cassetti shot was chipped out of the zone, the Lions were able to find some open space and net the game's first goal. They would carry that advantage into the second frame.
SECOND PERIOD
Despite trailing, the Broncos still continued their offensive onslaught, totaling 28 shots in the second 20 minutes. Grainger, Wendt and
Matteo Costantini had shots in the opening two minutes of the second period.
Just 2:21 into the period, Lindenwood was sent off for roughing. Galambos nearly tied the game, ringing a shot off the post, but Lindenwood would eventually get back to full strength.
However, minutes later, Grainger would tie the game while being tripped to help the Broncos go back on the power play. Now on the power play, Western Michigan didn't take long to capitalize on the opportunity. Washe found some room in front of the goal and was able to get a puck into the back of the net, giving WMU a 2-1 lead.
After a wealth of penalties in the middle portion of the period, the game would settle down and WMU would find another goal. This time, Grainger made a nice play to find Wendt wide open in front of the net for a 3-1 Bronco lead.
Western Michigan would get five more shots down the stretch of the period and eventually carried a 3-1 lead into the final 20 minutes.
THIRD PERIOD
WMU opened the final frame with shots from Colangelo and Fiedler, but both were saved by Burnham. Around the seven-minute mark of the period,
Ethan Phillips, Costantini and Washe fired a trio of shots on Burnham, but again, he was able to keep it a two-goal game.
Just over 13 minutes into the period, the Lions were sent off for high sticking. During the man advantage, Colangelo had a pair of shots on net, while
Alex Bump had one. Lindenwood would eventually get back to even strength, however.
Down the stretch, Western Michigan would continue to control play and close out a 3-1 victory. In total, WMU outshot the Lions, 67-17.
