Broncos Nab 10th Win and Collect Series Sweep of Lindenwood

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team collected its 10th win of the season and completed a series sweep of Lindenwood with a 5-1 victory on Saturday night at Lawson Arena.

The Broncos received goals from Ethan Phillips, Dylan Wendt, Sam Colangelo, Hugh Larkin and Chad Hillebrand. Phillips and Colangelo each finished the night with two points, while Cameron Rowe made 20 saves.

FIRST PERIOD
After a couple of shots from each team in the opening minutes, Cedric Fiedler was sent off for tripping. However, Rowe and the WMU defense stood tall, keeping all four shots out of the net to keep the score even at 0-0.

As the game moved to the middle portion of the first 20 minutes, WMU ramped up the offensive pressure, with Alex Bump and Hillebrand getting good looks on net. With under seven minutes to play in the opening period, the Broncos finally broke through with Phillips ripping a shot into the back of the net.

A little bit later, Lindenwood was sent to the penalty box for holding. Just 28 seconds into the man advantage, Bump slid a pass to Wendt who put the Brown and Gold in front, 2-0. During the final minutes of the first frame, WMU would get five more shots. The Broncos went into the first intermission with a two-goal lead.

SECOND PERIOD
Not even a minute into the second period, Lindenwood was sent off for boarding. Just like the first power play, Western Michigan made the Lions pay. After hitting the post with his first shot, Colangelo eventually found the puck back on his stick and fired a shot by Trent Burnham for a 3-0 lead.

As the game progressed, Lindenwood would eventually get on the board to make it a 3-1 game. However, a few minutes after that goal, the Lions went back to the penalty box for too many players on the ice. WMU would get three shots on the man advantage, but Lindenwood eventually returned to full strength. The Broncos carried a two-goal lead into the final period.

THIRD PERIOD
In the opening minutes of the final period, WMU would strike again, as Larkin used a beautiful pass from Joe Cassetti to light the lamp. That extended the WMU lead to 4-1.

About two minutes later, Hillebrand used a great pass from Matteo Costantini to add a fifth goal for the Broncos. Down the stretch, Western Michigan continued to apply pressure but couldn't generate any more goals.

In total, the Broncos outshot Lindenwood 44-21 and 13 different players recorded at least one point.
