KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team completed a sweep of St. Lawrence by earning a 4-0 shutout on Saturday night at Lawson Arena.
Dylan Wendt,
Tim Washe,
Owen Michaels and
Sam Colangelo netted goals for the Broncos, while
Cameron Rowe collected his second shutout of the season with 30 saves.
FIRST PERIOD
WMU was able to earn a power play in the opening minutes of the game and took full advantage of the opportunity. Late in the man advantage,
Samuel Sjolund and
Alex Bump found shots on net, and the puck would eventually find the stick of Wendt. He buried a shot into the back of the net to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the contest.
A few minutes later, WMU would go back on the man advantage due to a tripping call on SLU. With three seconds left on the power play, Washe jammed home a rebound from a Colangelo shot to make it 2-0 Broncos with more than 10 minutes to play in the first frame.
As the game progressed to the back half of the period,
Hugh Larkin would get sent off with a major penalty. Just over a minute in, however, the Saints would collect a penalty of their own, making it 4-on-4. Once that SLU penalty ended, the Saints would go back on the power play.
Western Michigan was strong defensively, limiting St. Lawrence to just one shot. SLU would then take a penalty late in the first period, giving WMU a power play heading into the second frame.
SECOND PERIOD
The Saints did well to kill off the penalty and eventually found a man advantage of their own minutes later. However, the WMU penalty kill was strong once again, allowing zero shots on net during the power play.
After the power play expired, Rowe made a pair of saves on SLU shots to keep the Broncos in front 2-0. Later in the period, Colangelo was sent off for cross checking. Rowe and the WMU defense continued to hold strong, stopping both shots SLU had on net.
To end the period, both teams were assessed minor penalties, and we headed to the final period with the Broncos in front, 2-0.
THIRD PERIOD
After those penalties ended, the Broncos were assessed a game misconduct and sent to the box for five minutes. It didn't take long for the Broncos to get off the penalty kill, as Tyler Cristall was sent off for tripping.
After the minor expired, SLU was sent to the box again for slashing. WMU would eventually go on the power play and got a shot on net from Colangelo. Just a couple minutes after Western Michigan's power play, Michaels buried a shot into the top corner of the net for a 3-0 WMU lead with under eight minutes to play.
Now trailing by three goals, the Saints pulled their goalie and added the extra skater. With just over two minutes to play, Colangelo used assists from
Matteo Costantini and
Chad Hillebrand to secure the 4-0 victory.
