KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team pushed its winning streak to three games with a 5-1 victory over St. Lawrence Friday night inside Lawson Arena.
The Broncos got goals from
Carter Berger,
Zak Galambos,
Chad Hillebrand,
Alex Bump and
Joe Cassetti.
Dylan Wendt finished with a pair of assists.
FIRST PERIOD
Early in the game, WMU was able to earn a power play, as Reilly Moran was sent off for slashing. The Brown and Gold didn't waste any time, with Berger lighting the lamp on the first shot of the man advantage.
A few minutes later, WMU would head to the box for tripping. However, the Broncos would continue their strong run on the penalty kill, stopping all six shots the Saints had.
WMU would eventually get another look on the power play with under six minutes to play in the opening period. Despite not scoring on the man advantage, Galambos was able to rip a shot into the net just a few seconds after the power play ended to give WMU a 2-0 lead heading into the second frame.
SECOND PERIOD
The Broncos went on the power play less than 30 seconds into the second period, with Luc Salem getting sent off for tripping. Wendt would get a look, but SLU would eventually get back to full strength.
Just a few minutes later, Western Michigan would get another power play. The Broncos didn't score on the man advantage, but they did break through just a couple minutes later. Hillebrand tipped a
Samuel Sjolund shot in front of the net to make it 3-0 WMU.
Less than two minutes later, St. Lawrence would get on the board to make the score 3-1. However, with under a minute to play, Bump made a nice move and found some open space. He ripped a shot by the SLU goaltender to give the Broncos a three-goal lead once again.
THIRD PERIOD
SLU again took a penalty in the opening minutes of a period, getting sent off for boarding. Sjolund had two shots, while
Sam Colangelo and
Tim Washe each had one. The Saints would eventually get back to full strength, though.
As the game progressed to the back half of the final frame, Washe came away with the puck and took it into the attacking zone. He lifted a pass to Cassetti who batted it out of the air and into the net for a 5-1 lead with under eight minutes to play.
Down the stretch, the Saints would pull their goalie, but neither team would find another goal, giving the Broncos a 5-1 victory.
