Broncos Complete Sweep of Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A strong offensive effort led the Western Michigan hockey team to a sweep of Colorado College on Saturday night. The Broncos shutout the Tigers, 4-0.

Luke Grainger led the way with four points on one goal and three assists. Dylan Wendt added two goals and Zak Galambos had the other. Cameron Rowe was spectacular in net, earning a 23-save shutout.

FIRST PERIOD
The Broncos got off to a fast start in the opening period, with Grainger getting a shot in the opening minute. Minutes later, WMU would get the first power play of the night.

On the man advantage, Alex Bump and Galambos would get looks on net, but CC would eventually get itself back to even strength. As the game moved to the middle portion of the game, WMU would have two players sent to the box, giving the Tigers a 5-on-3 power play.

In total, Colorado College would get five looks on net during the two-man advantage, but Cameron Rowe and the WMU defense stood tall and got the team back to full strength. Rowe had 16 saves in the period.

Down the stretch, Western Michigan would earn another power play with under a minute to play in the opening frame. Grainger got a shot on net, but the two teams entered the first intermission tied at 0-0.

SECOND PERIOD
WMU wouldn't score on the remaining power play time, but CC would head right back to the box after that penalty expired. This time, the Broncos were able to find the back of the net, with Galambos ripping a shot into the top corner of the goal.

Minutes after the Broncos' goal, CC would get a 5-on-3 power play, with one of the penalties being a major. In that time, the Brown and Gold defense would stand tall, allowing just three shots on goal. Then, Western Michigan would get another look on the power play, as CC was called for too many men on the ice.

It didn't take long for WMU to make the Tigers pay, as the first shot of the man advantage found the back of the net. Grainger found Bump in front of the net, and he slid a pass to Wendt in the slot. He knew what to do with it and increased the WMU lead to 2-0.

As the period moved to the later stages, Colorado College would get two more chances on the power play, but Western Michigan would actually get more shots than the Tigers on those penalties. WMU carried a two-goal lead into the final period.

THIRD PERIOD
Colorado College earned a power play in the opening minutes of the third frame, but WMU was able to win that battle, allowing no shots on goal and getting back to full strength.

Moments later, WMU would go back to the box. However, the Broncos would again stand tall defensively. On the man advantage, CC was able to muster up just one shot before the Broncos got back to even strength. Grainger also got a shot during the WMU penalty kill.

With time winding down, CC pulled Mbereko to gain the extra attacker. However, Wendt netted his second goal of the night to push the lead to 3-0. Moments later, some great passing led to a goal from Grainger, who secured the 4-0 victory.
