COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Thanks to
Alex Bumps' first career goal, Western Michigan was able to earn a 3-1 victory over Colorado College on Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.
Luke Grainger, Bump and
Dylan Wendt each scored on the night, with Bump providing the game-winning goal late in the final period.
FIRST PERIOD
After and early flurry from CC, the Broncos started to settle in and took control of the game. In the opening minutes, Bump nearly put the Broncos in front 1-0, but Tigers goalie Kaidan Mbereko was just able to get a piece of it to keep the game tied.
Later in the period,
Wyatt Schingoethe tipped a shot in front of the net that just slid by the right post. The game moved to the back half of the first frame and WMU would start getting even better looks.
Shots from
Samuel Sjolund and
Dylan Wendt caused a crowd in front of the Tigers' net. The puck would eventually find the stick of Grainger, who buried it into the net for a 1-0 Broncos lead. Sjolund would pick up his first career point, getting an assist on the goal.
Just moments after the goal, Ray Christy was sent of for tripping, giving WMU a power play late in the opening period. During the man advantage,
Sam Colangelo and Wendt would get looks on net, but CC would eventually return to full strength. Western Michigan carried a one-goal lead into the first intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
Colorado College was able to knot the game up at 1-1 early in the second frame, tipping a shot in front of the net. From there, however, WMU went back on the attack, immediately getting looks from
Matteo Costantini and
Daniel Hilsendager.
During the middle portion of the period,
Cam Knuble tried to jam a shot home, but CC was eventually able to clear the puck from danger. With under eight minutes to play in the period, the Broncos were able to kill a Tigers power play, allowing just one shot.
A few minutes later, WMU would get a power play, getting a shot from
Zak Galambos that would be saved. The two teams would head to the final period tied at 1-1.
THIRD PERIOD
The Broncos got off to a fast start in the final frame, getting looks from
Chad Hillebrand and Colangelo in the opening minutes. As the game moved to the middle portion of the final 20 minutes, WMU was sent to the box for slashing.
On the penalty kill, the Broncos were able to keep four shots out of the net and return to full strength. In the late stages of the game, Bump collected a rebound from a Wendt shot and found the back of the net to give WMU a 2-1 lead. It marked his first career goal.
Needing a goal to tie, CC pulled its goalie. However, WMU would add an empty netter from Wendt to secure the 3-1 victory.
