KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team was shutout by St. Cloud State, 3-0, Saturday night inside Lawson Arena.
FIRST PERIOD
Hugh Larkin had the first shot of the game before
Cameron Rowe was able to make a pair of saves on SCSU shots in the early stages of the opening frame. Just under five minutes into the game, the Broncos were sent to the box for boarding.
During the Huskies' man advantage, WMU was able to get the only look on net, with
Matteo Costantini firing a shot on Dominic Basse. A few minutes later, the Broncos went on the power play, getting a shot from
Sam Colangelo during the two-minute advantage.
After St. Cloud State was able to get back to full strength, Colangelo was given a major penalty and game misconduct, giving the Huskies a five-minute power play. During the power play, SCSU was able to tally a goal to grab a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos would eventually kill off the rest of the penalty and head to the second period trailing by just one.
SECOND PERIOD
Early in the second frame, WMU went back on the power play, with
Ethan Phillips getting the lone look of the man advantage. However, just as that penalty expired, Mason Reiners was sent off for holding.
WMU would generate more offense on this power play, getting good looks from
Samuel Sjolund and
Zak Galambos. Nothing would come of the man advantage, however.
In the middle portion of the period, Dylan Anhorn was sent to the box for tripping. However, SCSU was again able to kill off the power play. Shortly after, the Huskies were able to extend their lead to 2-0.
Later in the period, WMU killed off a Sjolund penalty, but St. Cloud State was able to find its third goal of the night moments after the penalty was killed. SCSU carried that three-goal advantage into the final 20 minutes.
THIRD PERIOD
The Broncos were able to kill off a penalty early in the third frame, and eventually started to find more shots on net. Following the SCSU power play, Sjolund got a look on net that nearly got the Brown and Gold on the board.
As the game moved to the later stages, WMU pulled Rowe from net and drew a penalty to get a 6-on-4 advantage. During the power play, Western Michigan would generate four shots.
Joe Cassetti,
Carter Berger,
Ean Somoza and Costantini each got looks on net. But Basse would stop them all, securing the 3-0 victory.
