KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell to St. Cloud State, 3-2, Friday night inside Lawson Arena.
Joe Cassetti lit the lamp in the first period for his second goal of the season, while
Luke Grainger netted his fourth goal of the season in the third period.
FIRST PERIOD
Neither team could find much offense in the early going, as the game hit the first media timeout with two shots on each side. From that point, however, the game started to pick up, with SCSU collecting the game's first penalty.
On the power play, Western Michigan would generate one shot from
Alex Bump, but the Huskies would eventually return to full strength. Moments later, WMU was sent off for slashing, but
Cameron Rowe was able to turn away two SCSU shots to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Late in the period,
Tim Washe found Cassetti in front of the net, who buried a shot into the back of the net to give the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead.
SECOND PERIOD
St. Cloud opened the second frame with a pair of shots that Rowe was able to handle. After some back and forth,
Jacob Bauer was sent off for cross checking. The SCSU power play ended with one shot on each side, and the Broncos carried their 1-0 advantage into the middle portion of the period.
The Huskies would eventually even the score with just over six minutes remaining in the second period. The two teams would head to the final period knotted at 1-1.
THIRD PERIOD
Dylan Wendt and
Ean Somoza had shots saved in the early part of the third frame, as the Broncos tried to create some offense. After a few good looks, Grainger would rip a shot by Dominic Basse to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead with under 10 minutes to play.
However, it didn't take long for SCSU to respond, with Jack Rogers tying the game just about a minute later. Not even 40 seconds after that, the Huskies would strike again and grab a 3-2 lead.
WMU would pull Rowe from net, gaining the extra attacker. With the extra skater, the Brown and Gold would generate four shots, but none would get by Basse, and the Huskies would hold on to win, 3-2.
