Women's Soccer Battles to Draw Against Ohio

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Thanks to a late goal from Jenna Blackburn, the Western Michigan women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six games, earning a draw against Ohio on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. Blackburn netted the game-tying goal in the 85th minute.

"We are very disappointed not to get the three points today, as we felt we played well as a team and dominated a lot of the game play," head coach Lewis Robinson said. "We weren't clinical enough with our movement and final ball to convert enough of our chances. Credit to Ohio as they made it very difficult for us and are a strong team."

FIRST HALF
Neither time could find much offensive momentum early in the game, as the two squads combined for two shots in the opening 10 minutes of the contest. Just over 15 minutes into the game, however, Madison Cotta tallied three shots and Jen Blitchok added one to put some pressure on the OU defense. The Bobcats were able to keep the game tied at 0-0.

Midway through the first 45 minutes, Drew Martin tried her luck on Ohio keeper Celeste Sloma, but Sloma was able to make another save. With the half winding down, Western Michigan had one last opportunity on a corner kick in the 42nd minute. However, Blitchok's shot would miss over the top of the goal, and the two teams would head to halftime tied at 0-0.

SECOND HALF
After a Blitchok shot was saved, Ohio went on the counter attack and netted the game's first goal. Shae Robertson was able to chip the ball behind the WMU defense and goalkeeper Lauren Boafo, allowing her to score on an empty net.

Now trailing by a goal, WMU went on the attack. Reagan Wisser was inches away from tying the game, as she sent a ball toward the center of the net. Sloma made a diving save to keep the Bobcats in front, 1-0, in the 64th minute. In the 77th minute, Bria Telemaque and Blackburn each found looks, but again, the Ohio defense was able to stop the threat.

It wasn't until the 85th minute that WMU would finally break through and tie the game. After ripping a shot off the crossbar, Blackburn followed her miss and netted the tying goal for the Broncos. Moments later, Blitchok nearly scored the game-winning goal, but the two teams would have to settle for a draw.

Overall, WMU dominated the stat page, leading in shots (25-10) and shots on goal (9-4). Western Michigan also had nine corner kicks, while Ohio did not have a single one.
