Werthman's Late Goal Lifts Broncos Over Miami

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team continued its winning ways on Thursday afternoon, defeating Miami 1-0 at the WMU Soccer Complex. The win pushes the Broncos to 8-3-3 overall and 4-0-3 in Mid-American Conference play.

FIRST HALF
Jenna Blackburn got the first two shots of the game, with both coming in the opening 10 minutes of the match. Just under 20 minutes into the first half, Miami would get two corner kicks, but the WMU defense stood tall and stopped the threat.

Neither team could find much offense in the half, as the two squads combined for just three shots in the final 17 minutes of the half. Emily Pagett and Abby Werthman were the ones to get shots for the Brown and Gold.

SECOND HALF
The Broncos came out much more aggressive in the second half, opening the second 45 minutes with a shot from Blackburn which was followed by two corner kicks. Brielle Gomez got a look off of the second corner, but the score remained 0-0 into the middle portion of the half.

In the 74th minute, Gomez tried her luck again, but Miami keeper Dominique Popa was again able to make the save. After a Miami shot, Jen Blitchok countered with the WMU offense, firing another shot on net for the Broncos.

WMU's best chance of the half came after a yellow card was given to Miami's Sophia Penegor. Werthman stepped up to take the free kick just outside the box and ripped it inside the left post to put the Broncos in front 1-0 in the 84th minute. Neither team would record a shot the rest of the way, and WMU would earn the victory.

The Broncos played a strong all-around game, leading in shots (13-2), shots on goal (7-0) and corner kicks (6-4).
