Women's Soccer Earns Victory Over Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team defeated Eastern Michigan, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Scicluna Field. The victory pushed the Broncos to 9-3-3 overall and 5-0-3 in Mid-American Conference play. WMU is now tied for first place in the conference.

"We are very pleased with the game today and the overall performance to get the result," head coach Lewis Robinson said. "Eastern is always a tough opponent and we felt like it was one of our most complete performances of the season. Our ladies have been working very hard and we are excited to get another big opportunity next week on the road!"

FIRST HALF
The Broncos flexed their offensive muscles early in the match, getting a shot from Heidi Thomasma in the opening minutes and a goal in the 12th minute. Jen Blitchok slid a beautiful ball to Stephanie Currie who beat the keeper to put the Brown and Gold in front 1-0 early in the game.

The offensive onslaught didn't stop there, with Jenna Blackburn getting three shots, Bria Telemaque firing two shots and Blitchok getting one in the middle portion of the half. In the 27th minute, WMU would find another goal, thanks to a great individual effort from Telemaque. She fought off a defender for the ball and sent a shot by the keeper to extend the WMU advantage to 2-0.

Western Michigan continued to control the rest of the half, outshooting the Eagles 6-1 the rest of the way. In total, WMU outshot EMU 15-2 in the half and carried a two-goal lead into the halftime break.

SECOND HALF
WMU continued to apply offensive pressure in the second 45 minutes, getting early looks on net from Currie and Blitchok. Currie would get another look on net in the 52nd minute, as the Broncos tried to add on to their lead.

About 25 minutes into the second half, Madi Canada tried a shot that was blocked. However, after that, Olivia Brunink intercepted an EMU pass and found Abby Werthman in the attacking zone. Werthman then crossed a pass to Jaden Peck who tipped the ball into the net for a 3-0 lead in favor of WMU.

Down the stretch, WMU would slow down the tempo and walk away with a 3-0 victory over the Eagles. The Broncos controlled the game, leading in shots (22-5), shots on goal (11-5) and corner kicks (8-1).
