Broncos Use Big First Half to Blow By Golden Flashes

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team remained unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play after downing Kent State, 3-1, at the WMU Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon.

WMU (2-4-4, 2-0-1 MAC) picked up goals from Jenna Blackburn, Jorden Campbell and Kai Sugiyama. Senior Hannah Sargent made three saves on the day to earn her second win of the season. The win extended WMU's overall unbeaten streak to three games.

Western Michigan took the early lead on Blackburn's second straight game with a goal. In the 12th minute Reagan Wisser played Blackburn through the KSU back line. The Golden Flashes' goalkeeper came out to challenger her, but Blackburn dribbled around her and tapped it into an empty-net.

The Broncos added to the lead in the 30th minute on Campbell's first career. Kent State attempted to clear the ball out of the box to the right side. Mira Pierre-Webster tracked it down and crossed it back into the box. Campbell played it off of her chest and kicked it into the net from 8-yards out to make it 2-2-0.

Sugiyama scored in similar fashion to her first career goal last week against Northern Illinois. The Golden Flashes tried to clear the ball out of the box and Sugiyama got a hold of it 25-yards out. She dribbled to the left side of the box and fired one up and over the goalkeeper for her second goal of the season in the 36th minute.

Kent State cut into WMU's lead, scoring with 23 seconds left to play in the first half. After a cleared corner attempt Siena Stambolich scored from the middle-edge of the box to make it 3-1.

The Broncos maintained possession and smothered the Golden Flashes in the second half, allowing just two total shots in the final 45 minutes.

Western Michigan is back in action on Sunday, making the trek out to Buffalo to take on the Bulls at 1 p.m.
