Broncos Battle Bulls to 1-1 Ties

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team went on the road to Mid-American Conference leaders Buffalo and battled the Bulls to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos (2-4-5, 2-0-2 MAC) jumped on the Bulls early, scoring in the 16th minute. Emily Pagett pressured a UB defender as Buffalo was trying to play out of the back. The defender tried to send the ball forward, but Pagett deflected it right to Reagan Wisser. Wisser volleyed a shot that slowly looped into the top-left corner of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

WMU kept up the pressure in the first half, outshooting the Bulls 11-2. The Broncos were unable to add to their lead and had to defend against a Buffalo attack that fired off nine shots in the second half.

The game-tying goal came in the 60th minute by Leah Wengender.

"Today's tie was certainly a game of two halves and probably a fair result on the day," said head coach Lewis Robinson. "We played our best half of soccer in the first half and maybe should have capitalized on a couple other chances to put the game away."

"We knew the second half would be difficult dealing with the wind and momentum, but we felt we defended well for large parts of the half. We can also take positives in being able to see the game out and manage it until the final whistle while under some pressure. Overall we're learning, improving and already looking forward to Thursday's game!"

Western Michigan returns home to host Central Michigan on Thursday at 4 p.m. for WMU's Cancer Awareness Game. The Broncos then head off to Oxford, Ohio, to take on Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m.
