KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened the 2022-23 season hosting the first day of the Vredevelt Invitational at Sorensen Courts on Saturday.
The Broncos opened up their day winning all four of their doubles matches. Peter Kuszynski and Jackson Boone defeated the duo of Seagraves and Nguyen from Navy 6-3. Ferdinand Schlueter and Benjamin George defeated Chicago State's Pahwa and Hidalgo, 6-2. Fifth-year senior Fynn Lohse and Brogan Pierce took down Alvarzes and Sandoval, also from CSU, 6-1 The final doubles win on the day came from sophomore Anton Arzhankin and senior Arjun Honnappa, 6-3, over Verma and Minsaas from DePaul.
Western Michigan went 7-1 in the first round of singles play. Schlueter, Kusynzki, George, Arzhankin and Honnappa all picked up wins in two sets, while Boone and Lohse were victorious in three. In the second round of singles play the Broncos won all eight of its matches.
Sunday's action will most likely be indoors at West Hills Athletic Club due to weather issues. The Broncos will compete in the second and third round of doubles, along with the final round of singles play.
