Wright State got off to a quick start in the first set, as the visitors opened up an early 5-1 advantage. Western Michigan did not get any closer than two points during the remainder of the frame, as the Raiders hit .353 on the way to claiming the first set.
Things were much tighter in the final three sets of the evening. The Broncos built a lead as high as four, 11-7, in the second set, but a 6-2 spurt helped bring Wright State back even at 13-13. WMU moved back in front by three, 21-18, but again the Raiders responded, and tied it up at 22-22. The two teams went back-and-forth until a 4-1 run helped WSU fight off a set point and finish off the second set, 33-31.
In the third set, three straight points helped the Broncos take a 15-12 edge. The lead was short-lived, as Wright State got right back even at 16-16. Six of the ensuing eight points went to Western Michigan, to put the hosts on top, 22-18. The Raiders drew back to within a point at 23-22, but after a timeout, WMU got kills from
Maggie King and Wilcoxson to force the contest into a fourth set.
The fourth frame was tight throughout as well, with a three-point advantage the largest either team could muster. With the Broncos ahead 21-20, Wright State reeled off four consecutive points to kickstart a 5-1 run to seal the set and the match victory.
The Broncos continue tournament play on Saturday. Western Michigan gets the day started with a 10 am contest against North Dakota, and then wraps up its weekend at 6 pm against Indiana State. For tickets, fans can visit
