Hot-Hitting Broncos Earn Pair of 3-0 Victories

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team hit .372 against North Dakota and .306 against Indiana State on the way to a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday at University Arena.
 
Following the victories, WMU's Julia Marr and Abi Wilcoxson were named to the All-Tournament Team. Marr tallied 35 kills (5.0/set) for the weekend while hitting .274. The sophomore recorded 30 digs (4.29/set), and posted a double-double on Friday against Wright State which saw her set career highs in both kills (27) and digs (16). Wilcoxson continued her strong start to the season with 25 kills (2.5/set) on a .317 hitting percentage in Western Michigan's three matches.

Western Michigan hit a blistering .372 as a team in the win over North Dakota. Maggie King paced the Broncos with nine kills on a .360 hitting percentage. Keona Salesman tallied seven kills on a .462 mark, while Madison Merz and Wilcoxson notched six kills apiece while hitting .556 and .417, respectively.
 
Logan Case handed out 31 assists and served up a career-high five aces. Andelyn Simkins posted a team-high eight digs.
 
A 7-2 run helped Western Michigan seize a 9-4 advantage in the opening frame. The Broncos used a pair of three-point spurts to build their lead to 18-9, and a 4-0 run put the first set out of reach in favor of WMU.
 
Western Michigan got out to a quick 4-1 edge in the second set, but the Fighting Hawks answered, evening it up at 5-5. The next two points went to the Broncos, and WMU stayed in front throughout the remainder of the second frame. Holding a 17-15 advantage, the Broncos reeled off eight of the next 11 points to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
 
With the third set tied at 9-9, Western Michigan used a 9-2 surge to open up an 18-11 lead. North Dakota got back to within five on multiple occasions, but a 5-1 run sealed the set and match victory for the Broncos.
 
In the nightcap against Indiana State, the Broncos hit .306 collectively, led by King's match-high 17 kills on a .385 hitting percentage. Amanda Glanton posted nine kills and three blocks while hitting .300. Simkins posted a season-high 19 digs, while Marr pitched in 14. Case notched her third double-double of the campaign after handing out 42 assists and tallying 10 digs.
 
A pair of 4-1 runs helped Western Michigan get out to a 15-9 advantage in the first set against the Sycamores. Indiana State got as close as three, 23-20, but back-to-back King kills sealed the first frame for the Broncos. King recorded 10 kills in the first set.
 
The second frame was even at 2-2 until Western Michigan ripped off a 10-1 run to build a 12-3 advantage. After two straight ISU points, the Broncos tallied seven of the next nine to up the margin to 19-7. The Sycamores could not get closer than 10 the rest of the way, as WMU cruised to a 2-0 match lead.
 
An 8-0 run helped Western Michigan erase an early 2-0 deficit in the third frame. The Broncos eventually built their lead to 20-10 before Indiana State mounted a rally. The Sycamores reeled off six points in a row to begin a 9-2 surge, which shrunk WMU's edge to 22-19. A Merz kill ended the ISU run, and the Broncos held on from there for their second 3-0 victory of the day.
 
Western Michigan continues non-conference play next weekend at the UNI Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Broncos are slated to face tournament host Northern Iowa on Friday evening, followed by a Saturday doubleheader against Grand Canyon and SEMO.
