TUCSON, Ariz. – Western Michigan redshirt freshman outfielder
Dylan Nevar has been named to the 2022
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshmen All-American Team, powered by Diamond Sports.
Last month, Nevar became the fifth Bronco to be named the MAC Freshman of the Year after a redshirt freshman campaign which saw him post a .325 batting average while starting 53 of WMU's 54 games.
This season, the Wisconsin Dells, Wis., native paced Western Michigan in home runs (11), doubles (20) and slugging percentage (.614). The 20 doubles were tied for third-most in the MAC, and helped the Broncos set a new single-season program record with 131 two-baggers. The 131 doubles were ninth-most in the NCAA at the end of the regular season.
Nevar's 11 home runs tied for seventh-most in the conference, and he and
Cade Sullivan became the first WMU teammates to blast double-digit homers in the same season since 2001. He had three multi-homer games this spring, including a four-hit, two-homer, five-RBI, performance in an 18-7 win at Michigan State on April 13, during which he tallied 13 total bases, one shy of the program's single-game record.
The redshirt freshman's .614 slugging percentage was sixth-best in the conference, while his 1.020 OPS ranked 10th. Nevar finished second on the Broncos and tied for ninth in the MAC with 49 runs batted in and his 64 total hits tied for 14th in the league.
Nevar is the fifth player in Western Michigan program history to earn Freshman All-American honors, joining Connor Smith (2016),
Brian Stroud (2008), Ethan Hollingsworth (2006) and Ryan Kochen (1998).
