KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The eighth-ranked Western Michigan hockey team took down rival Miami, 5-3, at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.
Five different Broncos scored in the win, with
Ethen Frank,
Dylan Wendt,
Daniel Hilsendager,
Luke Grainger and
Ronnie Attard all lighting the lamp. Hilsendager and Grainger also each had an assist for two-point nights. Junior
Brandon Bussi made 27 saves as WMU outshot MU 45-30 on the night.
The RedHawks took the early lead on a goal by Thomas Daskas at 6:25 in the first period. Daskas fired a shot through traffic and into the net for his fourth goal of the season with senior captain Derek Daschke picking up his first of three assists on the night.
WMU responded minutes later at 9:17 on Frank's nation-leading 24th goal of the season.
Drew Worrad centered the puck to
Cole Gallant on the power play. Gallant got a partial shot off from the slot and the puck rolled to
Ty Glover, who tipped it to Frank and Frank banged it home from left of the crease. Glover picked up his 11th assist on the goal and Gallant registered his 16th.
After heading into the locker rooms deadlocked at 1-1, Miami retook the lead just 1:32 into the second period on a power play goal. Matthew Barbolini deflected a shot by Matt Berry into the net for his 10th of the season to make it 2-1.
The Broncos tied it up again, this time at 6:36 in the second period.
Tim Washe found
Michael Joyaux all alone in the right circle but Joyaux's one-timer clanged off the upper-left elbow of the goal and down into the crease. Wendt jumped in behind to poke it in for his second goal of the season. Joyaux picked up his 22nd assist of the season, with Washe picking up his third.
Hilsendager gave Western Michigan its first and only lead of the night at 12:26 in the second period. Grainger won a draw to
Chad Hillebrand in the MU zone. Hillebrand got it back to Grainger and the sophomore forward found Hilsendager alone at the left point. The sophomore defenseman ripped it through traffic and into the net for his first collegiate goal. Grainger and Hillebrand both picked up their sixth assists of the season on the go-ahead goal.
Grainger deflected a shot by Hilsendager into the net at 8:15 in the third period for the game-winner. Hilsendager got the puck from
Jamie Rome in the left circle and fired a shot that hit Grainger's stick and got by Miami goalie Ludvig Persson to make it 4-2. The goal was Grainger's fourth of the season, with Hilsendager tallying his fifth assist and Rome's fourth.
Miami pulled Persson from net with just under three minutes to play and saw success, with Chase Gresock scoring his ninth goal of the season on a redirect off a pass from Barry, getting the RedHawks within one.
MU pulled Persson again from the net but Attard scored from deep in his own end with just over two seconds to play to seal the victory.
