Women’s Basketball Add Pair to 2023 Class

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's basketball team and head coach Shane Clipfell announced the addition of two student-athletes to the program. WMU is set to welcome center Evyn Carrier (Sycamore High School, Illi.) and guard Denali Craig-Edwards (Peoria High School, Illi.) to Kalamazoo in the fall of 2023. The duo will suit up for the Broncos beginning with the 2023-24 season.

"We believe we have a great duo at this stage of the signing process with Evyn and Denali. We still intend to add more to this class at a later date. They both address specific needs within our roster and fully anticipate them being great representatives of our program on campus and in our Kalamazoo community," said Head Coach Shane Clipfell

Evyn Carrier • C • 6-4 • Sycamore, Illi. • Sycamore High School

Carrier is a four-year starter at Sycamore High School. A team captain, throughout her high school career, she has helped the Spartans win three regional championships and three conference championships. Her numerous accolades include three All-Conference and three All-Area selections, as well as multiple IBCA All-State honors.

As a junior, she averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds per game while helping Sycamore to a school-record 32 wins, the school's first-ever sectional championship and a state runner-up finish.

Off the court, Carrier is a Pep Club leader, member of the Student Council, serves as a student advisor and is a part of the Big Sister Little Sister program.

"We love the addition of Evyn to our program. The obvious is that she will add some needed size to our roster and she also brings a skill set that we believe has the ability to really develop in a short time," added Coach Clipfell. "She has played at the highest level on the AAU circuit which has given her a view of what is needed for success at the collegiate level. She has also experienced much success at Sycamore High School where she is poised to have a terrific senior season."

Denali Craig-Edwards • G/F • 6-1 • Peoria, Illi. • Peoria High School

A four-year team captain, Craig-Edwards has led Peoria to three conference championships during her career. She has been named an IBCA All-State performer each of her first three seasons and an AP All-State selection twice. A three-time All-Conference and Journal Star All-Area honoree, Craig-Edwards eclipsed 1000 points for her career during her junior season. She has also been named a USA Today High School Sports Finalist and received Heisman High School Athletic recognition. Last season, she averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds, five assist, four steals and two blocks

Off the court, Craig-Edwards is Vice President of Key Club and Interact, a member of the National Honor Society and Global Leadership Summit. She is expected to graduate with Summa Cum Laude honors while receiving the College Board National African American Recognition Award.

"Denali brings us great versatility that will allow us to play multiple positions on the court," said Coach Clipfell. "She brings a toughness component that will help her translate to college. She is super competitive and can score in a variety of ways. Basketball is a family affair with her, she has been successfully coached by her parents for much of her high school career. We believe we are getting a college-ready student-athlete with Denali and couldn't be happier that her family is now part of ours."
