WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Western Michigan brings back six rotation players from it's 2021-22 squad, led by senior guard
Lamar Norman Jr., who was the leading scorer in the MAC last season at 19.8 points per game. After earning a spot on the All-MAC Third Team last spring, Norman was named to the Preseason All-MAC First Team
last week. WMU also brings back the team's leading rebounder from a year ago in
Markeese Hastings, who finished second in the conference with 8.8 rebounds per game. Other returners from the 2021-22 edition of the Broncos include
Gus Etchison,
Owen Lobsinger,
B. Artis White, and
Titus Wright.
Shemani Fuller and
Jack Stefanski are back in the fold as well after redshirting a season ago.
After he was hired in April, first-year head coach
Dwayne Stephens brought seven newcomers into the Western Michigan program, including a pair of transfers and five true freshmen. Senior transfers
Tray Maddox Jr. (Cal State Fullerton) and
Tafari Simms (Milwaukee) arrive to bring the Broncos some added experience into their lineup, with the duo having played more than 150 career games at the NCAA Division I level. Western Michigan's five-man freshman class consists of
Max Burton (Williamston, Mich.),
JaVaughn Hannah (Mount Clemens, Mich.),
Seth Hubbard (Jonesboro, Ga.),
Jefferson Monegro (La Salle, Quebec) and
Elisha Warren (Woodhaven, Mich.).
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Wednesday's matchup is also the final exhibition contest for Kalamazoo College before it begins its 2022-23 regular season on Friday, Nov. 11, at Manchester. The Hornets are coming off of a 5-21 campaign in 2021-22. Kalamazoo had four players average double-digits last season, and all four return, led by junior guard Ty Horky and his 12.6 points per game.
