Broncos Score Six Straight In Comeback Win Over Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team scored six straight goals to erase a 3-0 deficit and beat Ferris State, 6-4, at Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Jason Polin tallied twice, while the 18th-ranked Broncos (2-1-0) also picked up goals from Zak Galambos, Carter Berger, Ryan McAllister and Ethan Wolthers. Luke Grainger had two assists, while Berger also tallied an assist for a two-point game. Junior Cameron Rowe came in relief of starter Kirk Laursen and made 10 saves to earn his first victory as a Bronco.

The Bulldogs scored early in the first period and then added two goals in the span of 1:07 in the second to jump out to a 3-0 lead. WMU's comeback started after killing a power play and then getting one of its own midway through the second. Galambos fired a shot from the top of the right circle and into the top-left corner of the net for his first goal as a Bronco. Jacob Bauer and Grainger tallied assists as Western Michigan cut the lead to 3-1.

Polin then netted his first of the night to bring the Broncos within one at 14:46 in the second. The senior captain intercepted a pass as the Bulldogs tried to clear the zone and ripped a shot from the right circle and into the net for his second goal of the season.

Berger tied the game just 1:09 later on a shot from the right point that was deflected by a FSU defenseman up and over goalie Noah Giesbrecht and into the net.

McAllister gave WMU the lead with 16 seconds left to play in the second period, finishing off a pass by Max Sasson for his first collegiate goal.

Logan Stein was subbed in net for the Bulldogs but Wolthers went five-hole on a breakaway for his first collegiate goal and the game-winner. Cole Gallant set the breakaway up with a back-hand pass that he banked off the boards to Wolthers as he entered the FSU zone.

Polin added a late goal on the power play with Jamie Rome and Berger tallying assists.

Bradley Marek also scored on the power play for Ferris State with 11 seconds to play to set the final.

The Broncos outshot the Bulldogs 35-22 on the night and finished 2-for-5 on the power play. The WMU penalty kill went 8-for-10.

Western Michigan finally returns home to host Bowling Green on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at www.wmubroncos.com/tickets, with the game also be streamed live on NCHC.tv and carried by the Bronco Media Network.
