ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The 12th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team scored three times in the third period to pick up its first win of the season, a 4-1 victory at Alaska-Anchorage on Sunday night.
The game was deadlocked at 1-1 in the third period when Dylan Wendt finished off a pass from Hugh Larkin in front of the net for his first goal of the season at 5:37 in the final stanza. Larkin picked up his first assist of the year and Minnesota transfer Jack Perbix tallied his first assist as a Bronco after digging the puck out of the corner and passing it to Larkin.
WMU (1-1-0) kept the pressure on and pushed the lead to 3-1 at 9:19 on a goal by Tim Washe. Washe was set up perfectly by Oliver MacDonald for the tap-in goal on the stick side. Jamie Rome also picked an assist on the goal, giving him a two-point weekend.
Wendt returned to favor to Larkin at 11:34, feeding him the puck through the slot on a two-on-one rush for Larkin's first goal of the season, making it 4-1 and giving each a two-point night.
Western Michigan's first goal of the night came in the second period on the power play. Senior captain Jason Polin redirected a pass from freshman forward Ryan McAllister into the net for his first goal of the season. The assist was McAllister's second of the weekend and senior defenseman Carter Berger also picked up his second assist.
Redshirt freshman goalie Kirk Laursen made his first collegiate start and picked up his first career victory after making 10 saves on the night.
The Broncos outshot the Seawolves 35-11 and finished 1-for-3 on the power play.
WMU is back in action next Saturday night at Ferris State at 7 p.m.
